Environmental Sustainability Hints and Tips


 

At Royal Holloway, environmental sustainability is everyone’s responsibility. And every little bit counts! 

The following are just an example of the everyday actions to help reduce your environmental footprint. They range from the cheap and quick, to the slow and expensive, and not everyone will be able, or have the means, to do them all – so have a think what you can start doing now and may be able to do in the future.

Travelling

  • Use the travel hierarchy - including walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling.​ 
  • Offset flights​. 
  • Take staycations​. 

Shopping

  • Shop locally.​ 
  • Shop from zero waste stores.​ 
  • Buy more energy efficient equipment.​ 
  • Buy food and other products with no or low packaging​.
  • Opt for low carbon delivery options​. 
  • Buy from environmentally committed companies.​ 
  • Eat seasonally and sustainably, and buy and cook only the food you need.​ 
  • Eat less red meat, and fewer animal products.
  • Invest in and care for goods and clothes that last longer.​ 

At home and in halls

  • Stop using single use items such as shopping bags, plastic cups, cutlery, and paper towels.​ 
  • Turn off lights and equipment when not in use.​ 
  • Turn off taps when not in use and use only the water you need.​ 
  • Report any water leaks immediately.​ 
  • Add an extra layer of clothes, instead of turning the heating up higher than necessary.
  • Opt for a renewable energy supplier in rented accommodation.​ 
  • Swap out old bulbs for LED ones.​ 
  • Fix broken things and replace batteries​. 

Working and studying

  • Use less paper and go digital by default.​ 

  • Meet virtually rather than in person.​ 

  • Turn down screen brightness.​ 

  • Reduce unnecessary email traffic and data storage.​ 

In your community

  • Vote in favour of sustainable policies.​ 

  • Share your interests and demands with those you buy goods from.​ 

  • Share information with and influence family and friends.
