Welcome to Royal Holloway Alumni Mentoring!
About Royal Holloway Alumni Mentoring
Royal Holloway Alumni Mentoring is designed to support and guide students going into their final year. As a participant in this programme, you will have the opportunity to choose a Royal Holloway alumni mentor who works in a similar area to your interest, one you would like to explore, or who studied a similar degree. Your mentor will provide valuable insights and advice on various career and professional development-related topics.
*Early Access Offer*
UG2 students going into their final year who participated/completed the Summer Skills Placement Programme 2022/23 will be able to gain early access to the mentoring platform for the whole of the Autumn Term.
An extra bonus to Summer Skills Placement Programme participants: After completing the sessions with your mentor, you will have to complete a short, mandatory reflection task where you will write about the discussions and lessons you have learnt from your mentor as well as answering questions about how the programme has aided your thoughts around career prospects. Royal Holloway Alumni Mentoring will then be added to your degree transcript as a voluntary module, which future employers will be able to see.
How Does It Work?
To participate in Royal Holloway Alumni Mentoring, you will need to fill out an application form to express your interest and receive all the necessary materials and information to embark on your mentoring journey. You will then gain access to the mentoring platform where you will be able to choose from an array of alumni mentors (training on this process will be provided).
Once you have attended the necessary trainings and watched our short training webinars, you will be able to access RHConnect and choose a mentor. We encourage you to reach out to your mentor promptly to introduce yourself and schedule your first meeting.
The mentorship sessions will take place in your own time, and this should be organised between yourself and your mentor. You and your mentor will have the flexibility to schedule sessions that work best for both of you. These sessions can be conducted through video or voice calls, depending on your preferences.
During your mentorship sessions, you can discuss a wide range of topics related to career and professional development. This may include guidance on selecting a career path, building a professional network, enhancing your skills, preparing for interviews, and much more. You will be able to talk about past work experiences/your education and how it might have helped you in gaining an insight into an industry/role. Your mentor will provide valuable insights, share their experiences, and offer advice tailored to your individual needs.
By connecting with a mentor offering the traditional mentor/mentee relationship, you should expect to schedule in a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 sessions with your mentor between the sign-up period in October and the end of the programme in May. We expect both mentors and mentees to commit to regular sessions throughout the programme duration to ensure a fruitful and impactful mentoring relationship.
