In 2022, a plaque honouring Bedford College Alumna Sarah Parker Remond was unveiled at 6 Grenville Street to honour her work by the Nubian Jak Community Trust. The Trust work to highlight the important contributions of Black and global majority individuals to the history of Britain.

Sarah was born in Massachusetts in 1826 and went on to travel across the United States lecturing on the abolitionist movement and on the topic of women’s suffrage. In 1858 Remond travelled to Britain to gain further support for the abolitionist movement, which was at the time growing in strength in America.

While living in Britain Sarah studied at Bedford College and continued to raise awareness of the abolitionist and suffrage causes by serving on several Committees. In the mid-1860s Sarah travelled to Florence, where she worked as an Obstetrician and lived until her death in 1894.

When visiting our London Campus, why not take a walk to explore the local area and visit Grenville Street and view the plaque to commemorate this remarkable woman and Beford College Alumma.
