Royal Holloway Volunteering is hosting a “Repairing Laptops for Refugees,” event on Wednesday 30 October from 2-4pm in Windsor 02/03 on our Egham campus. It will be run in collaboration with our community partner, Screen Share UK, with support from our student-led Social Action projects,
There are two ways that colleagues can support the event:
- Volunteering at the event
- Donating your unused tech for refurbishment and rehoming.
We have created an opportunity for you to attend on our Volunteering Platform here. Screen Share UK will bring devices to refurbish on the day. There will be an educational element to start off, explaining how digital poverty can impact marginalised communities such as refugees, which will then be followed by full training to make the opportunity as inclusive as possible for the less tech savvy. The goal is to refurbish as many devices as possible within the 2-hour period, which will then be distributed to refugees and asylum seekers who need them and this really ties in nicely with our University of Sanctuary application and, of course, being a University of Social Purpose!
Concurrently, we are also running a laptop/tablet amnesty to generate donations for Screen Share UK, and these devices will be passed on at the event for the charity to refurb and distribute.
Screen Share UK make the following stipulations when accepting laptops; they should:
1. Switch on
2. Have a built-in camera
3. Be no more than 8 years old
We are requesting that devices have their hard drive wiped so that data is deleted, and then be dropped into a collection box at the Volunteering Hub (Next to the SU shop in the Davison Building) on our Egham campus.
You can also register to join this opportunity on our
online platform.
