Resitting Assessments

Important information for students who need to resit assessments (both First Sit and capped resits)

What does it mean if I have to resit?

You have been given the opportunity to resit assessments you have failed.

Not all options are availabe for all students and you should check with your School when your resit opportunies will be.

You cannot progress to the next year of study or complete your degree until you have retaken the failed assessments and passed the necessary modules.

What is the difference between a Resit and a First Sit/Uncapped Resit?

Resit

A further opportunity to attempt an assessment. The module mark will be capped at 40% for UG and 50% for PGT. This will be the final attempt at the assessment. This is usually taken at the next available sitting of the assessment which could be:

  • Summer Assessment Period (May) (SU-AP) (for PGT Jan Starters)
  • Summer Vacation Assessment Period (SV-AP), following results published in Summer
  • Next academic year.

You must confirm your options of when to take the resit with your School. No teaching is included but your School will make appropriate materials available to you via Moodle.

Uncapped Resit (PGT)

A further opportunity to attempt an assessment usually offered as a result of accepted Extenuating Circumstances. It will be indicated by UR after your module mark on Campus Connect (via the Statement of Results). The module mark will not be capped.

First Sit (UG)

A further opportunity to attempt an assessment usually offered as a result of accepted Extenuating Circumstances. A First Sit will be indicated by FS after your module mark on Campus Connect (via the Statement of Results). The module mark will not be capped. This is usually taken in the Summer Vacation Assessment Period (SV-AP) but can also be offered in the next academic year. The options of when to take the resit will be outlined in the My Studies area on Campus Connect, under the progression section. Fees do not usually apply. No teaching is included but your School will make appropriate materials available to you via Moodle.

Resit fees

From 2023/24 there will be no fees for resitting assessments without attendance. Please note that if you are only resitting exams, you will not be entitled to any Student Finance funding as you will not be in attendance.

Visa Information

If you opt to resit (not in attendance) in the next academic year then you are not required to attend classes and will not be classed as a full-time student. As you will not be in full-time attendance the UKVI does not allow the College to sponsor you in your resit year. This means that the College will have to cancel your current Tier 4/Student visa.

For further information please visit the International Student Support webpages. If you need any other visa advice please contact internationaladvice@royalholloway.ac.uk.

Appeals

If you have a question about your results or progression decision, please contact your School Administration team in the first instance.
