The Turing Scheme is the UK government's programme to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world. Find out more here.

Holloway Global is the name for Royal Holloway's Turing Scheme project.

What funding can I get in 2023/24 and how will I recieve it?

Turing Scheme funding is available for 2023-24 and the grant rates are as follows (from the Turing Scheme Programme Guide):

HE student placements with a total duration of four to eight weeks will receive:

  • £545 per month (equal to £136.25 per week for Group 1 destinations)
  • £480 per month (equal to £120 per week for Group 2 and 3 destinations).

Participants on an HE placement meeting the disadvantaged background criteria outlined below will receive an additional £110 per month to their cost-of-living grant. As such, the total cost of living grant funding provided to students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be as follows.

What is the eligibility criteria for Turing Scheme funding?

Turing Scheme funding is available for all Undergraduate students (and Postgraduate students applying for volunteering abroad opportunities) and there are additional funds for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (including Mental Health conditions) and financially disadvantaged/historically under-represented students.

Holloway Global want opportunities to be as accessible as possible, so we are using the criteria below, and our own Contextual Offer Admissions criteria for eligibility:

  • Students with low household income or low socio-economic status (including those with an annual household income of £25,000 or less)
  • Students receiving Universal Credit or income-related benefits because they are financially supporting themselves or financially supporting themselves and someone who is dependent on them and living with them, such as a child or partner
  • Students who are care-experienced
  • Global Majority/ BAME students
  • Students who are first in their family to attend university
  • Students from low participation neighbourhoods

Don't worry if you do not meet this criteria - everyone who meets the programme eligibility requirements, including those around minimum programme length (28 days), can receive a minimum amount of funding, currently £480 even if they do not qualify for the uplift funding mentioned above.

Can international students apply for Turing funding?

Yes! So long as you are a current Royal Holloway student and will be at the time you participate in the programme, you can receive funding.

Can postgraduate or foundation year students apply for Turing funding?

Postgraduate students can only apply for volunteering abroad opportunities with partners.

Foundation year students will have the opportunity to get involved with Holloway Global experiences when they progress on to their degree programme.

When do I find out if I've been successful in my funding application?

We aim to update all students within two weeks of the application deadline.

Would Turing Scheme funding cover 100% of the costs of the trip?

Not always - that's why it is important for you to apply for your funding first and find out how much you are set to receive.

Everyone is eligible for basic funding towards living expenses and travel costs; this amount increases depending upon your eligibility criteria.

Other costs such as programme fees for volunteering are not covered although support for fundraising is provided by partner organisations.

Unfortunately, we are not permitted to use Turing funds to pay for Summer Schools fees so these costs are not covered - check out the Summer School section to find out more.

If I need to make up a shortfall in Turing Scheme funding, what options are available?

If your Turing funding does not cover all of the cost for your trip there are various funding bursaries and grants for which you can apply, click on the links below to view what is available:

  1. The Lord Mayor's 800th Anniversary Awards Trust
  2. Jack Petchey Foundation
  3. Studying abroad: travel grants for students (England)

You can also try crowdfunding or fundraising which can be an enjoyable experiece and let you share your plans with others, such as bake sales or sponsored events.

Our volunteering team and charity partners can support you with this - please do get in touch with the volunteering team to discuss this further.

When is the deadline for applications?

International Exchange application deadline is 8th December 2023.

Volunteering partners have rolling deadlines - please refer to the links provided above.

Global Placement partners have rolling deadlines - please refer to the links provided above.

About Raleigh International (volunteering)

Raleigh International is defined by the passionate and hard-working people that make up its global team. A youth-driven organisation supporting a global movement of young people to take action. Young people help to determine, design, and lead the work Raleigh does. Raleigh International is an ever-evolving organisation, constantly adapting to new ideas and challenges. But what never changes is their dedication to working with young people and communities to create an impact that lasts.

Start your Raleigh Expedition in Costa Rica, the most biodiverse country in the world. Despite being only 0.03% of the world’s land mass, Costa Rica is home to almost 5% of the planet’s biodiversity. It is naturally rich in ecosystems and species; however, the country’s natural environment is fragile and considered vulnerable by many environmental NGOs and SINAC (National System of Conservation Areas). Now more than ever we need young people like you to participate in the Expedition and help us fight the climate emergency.

New opportunity for Raleigh South Africa is now available too. A word you will hear a lot in South Africa is Ubuntu. It means ‘I am because we are‘. South Africans are all about the people and how we can all work together. Through this Raleigh Expedition, volunteers will see the real South Africa. In the Community phase, you will be in the heart of the rural communities where you will be welcomed by friendly faces. On the Environmental phase you will be based in a reserve open to the Kruger National Park which will allow to you to see all the animals, but without the tourists. This Raleigh Expedition will take you to the heart and soul of South Africa, and it will change your life forever.

Find out more by attending an information session and apply for Raleigh International opportunities here.

Remember once you sign up you need to let the Turing Team know -  turing-scheme@rhul.ac.uk.

Can Turing Scheme funding be used for volunteering programmes outside of the listed charity partners?

No, for 2023-24 we are only working with our community partners, Challenge Abroad, Think Pacific, Raleigh Costa Rica, Travelteer and Play Action International.
