The lateral flow test

Find out more about what the lateral flow test is and what it involves

What is a lateral flow test?

Lateral flow antigen tests are tests for students and staff who don’t have any symptoms (asymptomatic). The test is intended to detect the presence or absence of coronavirus by applying a swab or saliva sample to the device’s absorbent pad.

Why should I get tested?

Students and staff who attend campus regularly are required to be tested on a weekly basis through the test centre. For regular test results, it is more efficient for students and staff to create an NHS account as this speeds up the registration process.

If you are on campus, living in Halls, or living locally and using campus facilities, please remember to take regular lateral flow tests, either at our asymptomatic testing site or by using a home test kit that can be ordered from the NHS

What does a test involve?

The tests involve you taking a swab from the back of your throat and your nose. View step-by-step instructions here.

What happens after my results?

If the test result is negative, you can continue to work/attend class as usual and you will be informed of any future testing.

If you test positive, you will need to get an NHS Covid-19 test (known as a PCR test) to confirm if you have Covid-19. If your PCR test comes back positive, please let us know by completing this form so that we are able to support you.
