The following message has been sent to all colleagues today, 6 May 2021.
After leading Royal Holloway for more than a decade, today I have written to the Chair of Council to say that I intend to retire at the end of July 2022.
Since 2010, our student population and staff numbers have grown, we have risen in league tables, built stronger external relationships and have a campus and facilities that are in better shape. The result is a strong and confident university that is well respected by peers. As we come out of the pandemic, the new three-year strategy provides a route to continued success: it builds upon our research strengths, continues to adapt our teaching and student support for the next generation of students, and ensures we operate on a sustainable basis.
Although still over a year away, it will be with great sadness that I shall be leaving an excellent group of colleagues with strong academic records and professionalism, a vibrant and engaged group of students, and a supportive group of alumni, supporters and stakeholders, who together, make Royal Holloway a very special institution.
Arrangements for the appointment of my successor will be made shortly by our governing body. Until a new Principal takes over in August 2022, I shall continue to work with you in ensuring Royal Holloway thrives by inspiring, students and staff, to succeed and fulfil their potential.
With best wishes,
Paul
