Today (Tuesday 10 September) marks World Suicide Prevention Day, an annual event bringing together communities and organisation together to raise awareness about how we can all work together to create a world where fewer people die by suicide.

We aim that our students and staff feel empowered to tackle the stigma and myths surrounding suicide, feel confident to be suicide prevention advocates, and develop a suicide-safer community where everyone can be supported.

The 2024 campaign theme encourages us all to #StartTheConversation to help change the narrative on suicide. It is so important to talk about suicide openly, so people feel able to ask for support – we know that often the most difficult words to say are the most important ones.

Did you know?

  • Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone.  It is estimated 1 in 5 people will experience suicidal thoughts.
  • Suicide is the most common cause of death of young people in the UK.
  • Talking about suicide doesn't make it more likely to happen. In fact, it can help prevent it.
  • Anyone can prevent a suicide. You don't need to be a mental health expert.
