The Department of Music at Royal Holloway has a well-established national and international reputation in musical performance. It has nurtured the talents of musicians who have subsequently occupied a distinguished position in musical life both in the United Kingdom and abroad. The performance programme plays an integral role in the life of the Department of Music.
At Royal Holloway we have an active percussion faculty, with industry-standard equipment and practice facilities for first-study and leisure-time percussionists. Please see below some important information if you are a drummer/multi-instrument percussionist:
We have provided a drum set for your use and band practices in Woodlands Cottage 0-02 (Band room).
You are expected to provide your own cymbals and hardware. If you need cymbals or hardware, you can check out a set by contacting Dr Tom Wagner. However, you will be expected to return all borrowed equipment at an agreed-upon date in the condition you received it, and you will be charged for any missing or damaged parts.
If you require an additional drum kit, please contact Dr Tom Wagner to loan one.
Royal Holloway has a dedicated Percussion Suite situated in Wettons Terrace Studio 0-03. Percussion studio access is restricted to first study percussionists, percussionists in the university orchestra, and percussion ensemble members on an as-needed basis.
Access will be granted after an induction on the care and use of all percussion instruments and spaces.
Important information
- Always return instruments and stands to their proper location after use.
- When moving mallet instruments, you MUST first remove the keyboards and resonators. This is to prevent damage.
- All auxiliary percussion instruments and stands are stored in Tom Wagner’s office (Wettons Terrace Room 1-00). You may sign out an instrument or stand by contacting Dr Tom Wagner. You will be expected to return all borrowed equipment at an agreed-upon date in the condition you received it, and you will be charged for any missing or damaged parts.
Any access issues to the buildings should be forwarded to NathanJames.Dearden@rhul.ac.uk.
Royal Holloway has a world-class line-up of instrumental tutors, and the percussion faculty is no exception. Whether you are a first-study percussionist or a leizuretime drummer seeking some guidance, our Visiting Tutor in Percussion, Alonso Mendoza, is available to take students.
If you would like to arrange a consultation lesson, please contact NathanJames.Dearden@rhul.ac.uk. If you are enrolled onto a performance-related module at the Department of Music, please refer to the guidance here (link embedded)
