Conductors' Collective at Royal Holloway

ABOUT US

Royal Holloway Conductors’ Collective was established in 2018 to provide a platform for budding conductors to develop their skills. This informal environment is a great way for conductors of any standard to receive feedback on their technique and to work with instrumentalists / singers, gaining a wealth of experience in rehearsal leadership. This ensemble is also ideal for instrumentalists who would like to play in a low-pressure environment. Many of our conductors bring their instruments along and play for each other, creating a wonderfully supportive and friendly atmosphere. Since we pride ourselves on being an ensemble for anyone and everyone, Conductors’ Collective does not hold an audition process.

Our weekly sessions are held at 4.00pm-6.00pm on Sundays, during which each conductor will get 15 minutes to workshop their piece, with the goal of performing this at a masterclass in Term 2. This masterclass will provide insightful feedback from an industry professional, such as Neil Ferris or Nathan James Dearden (invited guest conductors from previous masterclasses).

The 2023-24 committee will be run by Oliver Grimes, and sessions will be led by Asia Bonuccelli and Lydia Callomon.

Royal Holloway Brass Band

ABOUT US

Royal Holloway’s own brass band, rehearsing and performing a broad selection of music from traditional marches to more experimental modern repertoire, with some fan favourites along the way.

The musical events lined up for this year include Oktoberfest festivities, a joint ‘Heroes and Monsters’ concert with a local brass band, a Christmas concert with Jane Holloway Choir (alongside plenty of carolling), the annual UniBrass contest held in Sheffield and a tour to DisneyLand to finish the year! We promote versatility in the band, from encouraging brass quintets to seeing many brass players take on the challenge of learning different instruments within the ensemble, or even taking the rehearsal as conductor. We encourage all student and staff brass instrumentalists and percussionists of all levels, studying any course, to get in touch. We also love to throw in a social whenever possible, so join us for some musical bingo, SU nights, pub crawls, attending local brass band concerts or the essential post-UniBrass curry.

If you have any questions, or just fancy a chat, drop us a line and we would love to get to know you!

Our smaller, auditioned choir Hardcore Harmony compete at national level, tackling extra technical arrangements and incorporating choreography into performances. Come and try out if you’re feeling enthusiastic!

As a society, we champion inclusivity and accessibility and we have garnered multiple awards for doing so! We love and celebrate one another unconditionally and we cannot wait to welcome you with open arms!

Off campus, our members have performed on The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent joining together with members of Gospel Choirs from all over the country. We have previously won the national competition University Gospel Choir of the Year (UGCY) and hope to enter more competitions this year.

Each year we go on tour and get to sing in venues around the world. Past destinations include, Amsterdam and Dinseyland Paris. This past year the choir went to Bruges, Belgium, and performed in Bruges Cathedral among other venues.

We sing a large variety of music so there is always something for everyone. We aim to include popular music as well as traditional gospel music so no one will feel left out!

As well as performing, we organise numerous socials from theatre trips, to pyjama rehearsals and open mic nights and many more. Savoy Opera Society

ABOUT US

Savoy Opera Society was founded in 1966 as the University’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Being the oldest student society on campus, we remain at the heart of the performing arts scene at Royal Holloway to this very day. Guided by our love of Opera and Operetta our society is home to some of the finest singers, actors, and musicians on campus, and we pride ourselves in providing an essential, yet diverse, platform for those who love to perform.

Each year, we put on both an autumn and spring term show, producing productions that range from Gilbert and Sullivan’s joyous “Pirates of Penzance”, to Cole Porter’s raucous “Anything Goes”. Most recently, in the summer of 2018, we had showcased "The Gondoliers" at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, in the prestigious Harrogate Theatre! Cornerstones of an experimental approach that has reaped rich rewards and that show we are constantly looking to grow and improve.

On top of this, we offer other opportunities, such as formal and informal concerts, and at Savoy Opera we strive to provide exciting, and above all, fun opportunities for our members. We also pride ourselves in providing an excellent shadow scheme for those who want to work backstage, as well as fantastic openings for musicians looking to participate in a performance orchestra. Yet as well as this, we in Savoy also boast a vibrant social calendar packed with everything from theatre trips, to picnics and nights out. Moreover, our amazing community takes great delight in welcoming newcomers into the fold. Indeed the dedication, passion, and camaraderie the latter shows is consistently astounding and shines through in everything Savoy does.

In the year of our 50th anniversary, we were honoured with a nomination for Most Improved Society of the Year. This was a clear recognition of how we in Savoy successfully blend half a century of knowledge, with boundless enthusiasm to offer a truly unique experience that many of our members treasure long into the future.
