The Welcome Week Choir is an important part of bringing new and returning students together at the beginning of each academic year. It is compulsory for students enrolled at the Department of Music to be involved in either the orchestra or choir, but we also welcome any other new student from a different discipline. 

For 2024, the Choir will be preparing and performing the following items: 

  • Gabriel Fauré: Cantique de Jean Racine
  • George Frederic Handel: Zadok the Priest
  • Ola Gjeilo: Ecce Novum
  • Ko Matsushita: Cantate Domino in B♭
  • Ily Matthew Maniano: Padayon

  • Aram Khachaturian: 'Waltz' from Masquerade
  • Doreen Carwithen: Excerpts from Suffolk Suite
  • Ralph Vaughan Williams: 'Come Sunday' from Folk Song Suite
  • Samuel Coleridge Taylor: 'Danse nègre' from African Suite, Op. 35
  • Ferde Grofé: 'Mardi Gras' from Mississippi Suite 
  • Perez Prado: Que Rico Mambo

Activity outline

The Music Department at Royal Holloway has a well-established national and international reputation in musical performance. It has nurtured the talents of musicians who have subsequently occupied a distinguished position in musical life both in the United Kingdom and abroad. The Department hosts 31 expert instrumental and vocal tutors to teach and support our students. Check out the Department of Music webpage to find out who’s who.

New undergraduate and postgraduate students joining Royal Holloway in September 2024 must meet and enrol with Nathan James Dearden (Performance Manager) anytime between 9.00am and 5.00pm on Tuesday, 24 September 2024, Wednesday, 25 September 2024, and Thursday, 26 September 2024. 

Your enrolment meeting will take place either on MS Teams or in-person (dependent on the student's preference). There you will be allocated an Instrumental or Vocal Tutor and will be spoken through the Lesson Agreement, plus find out when your first lesson will be. 

Students must bring and/or show proof of their Grade 7/8 attainment to this session, as per the module requirements for first-year performance modules.
