What are randomized MAC addresses?

A MAC address (Media Access Control Address) is a unique identifier; a code assigned to your device so networks can identify it.

More recently companies have been introducing features that allow some devices, like laptops, tablets, and mobile phones, to use regularly present a new MAC address to avoid the potential for device tracking.

CampusNet has a limit to the number of devices a single user can add to it, and MAC randomization makes your device seem like new when it generates you a new address, so this can fill up your device limit fast.

If you've hit your limit, you'll need help from the IT Service Desk to remove some of the old randomize MAC addresses your device has stopped using.

To prevent this, you can either turn off MAC address randomization altogether, or turn off MAC randomization for CampusNet specifically. We recommend turning it off only for CampusNet, but it's up to you. Every type of device will have slightly different ways of doing this, but here are the instructions you should follow on iOS (Apple devices), which has the randomize setting turned on by default.
