How do I install Nvivo?

 

NVivo is software that supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It lets you collect, organize, and analyze content from a number of sources. 

To install Nvivo for Mac:

To install Nvivo for Windows:

The items above will download as zip files. You will need to:

  • Ensure you are connected to CampusNet or a VPN connection
  • Download the correct format for your computer - either Windows or Mac 
  • Extract the downloaded files from their zip folder.

For the Windows file, once downloaded:

  • Right click nvivo14-windows.zip and choose 'Extract All'. Microsoft offers guidance on how to uncompress zipped files.
  • Navigate to the .exe file within the extracted folder file in File Explorer. Then right click nvivo14.exe and choose “Run as Administrator”. On Windows 11 this option may be found under the "Show more options" sub-menu. You might find Microsoft's Windows 11 File Explorer support page helpful.
  • If you see a Smart Screen Filter message blocking the install, click "More Info" to show the Allow button
  • Depending on the speed of your computer, installation will take 5-10 minutes.  Once the installation is complete there will be a message shown in the black command window. Then you may close the window
  • Open NVivo by clicking the link in the 'start menu'.

For the Mac file, once downloaded:

  • Double-click the zip file to extract NVivo 14.pkg
  • Run this and accept the defaults to allow the package to install
  • When prompted, enter your password, and click 'OK'  to access files in your desktop folder
  • Once this has completed, open the NVivo app
  • You may be asked to give NVivo permission to access data on your computer, so click the 'Open Security & Privacy' link to grant this (toggle on)
  • If the install package fails to run, please double-check you have 'Security & Privacy' settings set to 'App Store and identified developers' (and not 'App Store') Take a look at Apple's instructions for opening apps safely on your Mac
