Retaking Assessments

These pages outline the arrangements for students receiving their results for the 2019/20 academic year for information on the current academic year please click here.

It's important to view your results and read the outcome of your assessments in Campus Connect carefully as if you are not able to progress, you may be given the option to complete retakes in the course(s) you failed.

The below information should provide more detail about retakes but if you have any questions or need advice on what to do, make sure you contact your tutor in your Department.

What does Retake, Resit, Repeat and First-Sit mean?

Retake is the word for any type of further attempt; there are then several different forms of retakes:

  • Resit (not in attendance) – This means that you’ll have to retake any assessments that you have failed without having to attend any of the teaching again. Resit marks are capped at the pass mark; 40% for undergraduates and 50% for postgraduates.
  • Repeat (in attendance) – This means that you must retake all of the course assessments and engage in all teaching for the course again. Repeat marks are not capped.
  • First Sit (undergraduates) / Uncapped Resit – (postgraduates) – This means that you can retake (or take if you didn’t complete them the first time) the assessments that were affected by approved Extenuating Circumstances, but cannot attend the teaching again. There is no cost associated to taking a First Sit or Uncapped Resit and the mark is not capped.
  • Deferral of Assessment – This is where students have applied in advance of the assessment to defer it and complete it at the next available opportunity as a result of Extenuating Circumstances. Deferrals are usually only permitted for postgraduate students, but in the 2019/20 academic year, undergraduate students were also permitted to defer as a result of COVID-19. Deferral marks are not capped.

What courses can I retake?

Students re usually only permitted to retake courses that they have failed unless they have been granted a ‘First Sit’ at a course they passed - plese see below for infrmation on First Sits in 2020.

Student are usually permitted 2 attempts at a course so you can retake any courses you have failed at the first attempt.  However, there may be some restrictions on when and how your retake a course; for example some courses have to be repeated because they contain practical elements or group work that cannot be replicated with a resit.

For the details of what courses and what assessments within the course, you need to retake please contact your Department for advice.

Are all students who failed courses completed after 1 March 2020 allowed First Sits / Uncapped Resits because of COVID-19?

The College has made arrangements so that if you failed or were unable to submit an assessment after 1 March 2020 then you will be offered another attempt at the assessment; this additional attempt will be appropriate to your current registration:

  • Undergraduate students will be offered a First-Sit/ First-Sit for repeat (uncapped) and postgraduate students will be offered an ‘Uncapped Resit’, the marks for all of which will be uncapped.
  • Undergraduate students who are already completing a resit attempt, will be offered a First-Sit for resit and postgraduate students who are already completing a resit attempt, will be offered another resit, the marks for which will be capped in line with College Regulations.

This allowance will be indicated via a code with your individual course mark(s) on Campus Connect:

  • FS - First Sit
  • FR - First Sit for Resit/Repeat
  • UR - Uncapped Resit
  • UT - Uncapped Third Attempt

The main exception to this allowance is where you have failed the course due to a penalty applied for academic misconduct. If you are able to retake a course in such circumstances, this would be as a resit or repeat (i.e. your mark will be capped at the pass mark).

There are also a small number of courses which cannot be taken as a resit but must be repeated, for example those requiring an element of group or practical work. Students can therefore not be granted a First-Sit in these courses but will be able to Repeat these courses.

What happens if I failed a course completed before 1 March 2020?

If you failed a course due to not passing or not completing an assessment before 1 March 2020, this will not be included in the First-Sit / Uncapped Resit allowance.

If you are required to retake a course in such circumstances this will count as a resit or repeat unless you have submitted Extenuating Circumstances and were otherwise granted a First-Sit or Uncapped Resit for this reason, which would be indicated via a code with your individual course mark(s) on Campus Connect:

  • FS - First Sit
  • FR - First Sit for Resit/Repeat
  • UR - Uncapped Resit
  • UT - Uncapped Third Attempt

Am I allowed a First-Sit / Uncapped Resit in a courses I passed in 2020 because of COVID-19?

You will not usually be offered a First-Sit or Uncapped Resit for courses you have passed. However, if you think that your performance in a particular course was significantly affected by COVID-19 then you may be able to apply for this opportunity during the 2020 Summer Vacation Assessment period. All applications will require academic approval prior to being granted; please see the Summer Vacation Assessment Period information (below) for further information.

When will retakes take place?

  • First-Sits / Uncapped Resits: It is expected that First-Sits / Uncapped Resits are completed at the next available opportunity which will be in the 2020 Summer Vacation Assessment period. If you have not progressed or been awarded, you will automatically be registered for these retakes. If you have progressed or been awarded then you will be given the option to take up the First-Sit/uncapped resit in summer 2020.
  • Resits: If you have failed a maximum of 30 credits (undergraduate) or 40 credits (postgraduate), you will have the option to complete resits in the 2020 Summer Vacation Assessment period and you will be automatically registered for these retakes. If you have failed more than 30 credits (undergraduate) or 40 credits (postgraduates) then you will have to wait to complete resits in the 2020/21 academic year.
  • Repeats: As Repeats require students to engage in teaching activities, these cannot take place until the next academic year; 2020/21.
  • Deferral of Assessment: You will be registered for deferrals for the period you indicated in your deferral application. If your circumstances have changed and you can no longer complete the assessment as planned, please contact us.

Do I need to register for Summer Assessments?

You will only be able to register for summer assessments if you are eligible to retake your course in the summer assessment period i.e. you have been offered this in your progression outcome in Campus Connect. Registration for summer assessments will be different depending on your circumstances:
