Applying for ECs

Where unforeseeable circumstances beyond your control have delayed or prevented you from completing/taking an assessment (and an Extension is not available or appropriate) you can apply for Extenuating Circumstances (sometimes called ECs) to be taken into account when your results are reviewed and approved.

Should I apply for Extenuating Circumstances?

1. Are you experiencing UNEXPECTED, UNAVOIDABLE and SHORT TERM circumstances that are impacting your ability to complete/submit an assessment? (Click for more information)

Not all circumstances are deemed to be unexpected, unavoidable or short term - examples of the type of circumstances that will be considered, together with a list of those that will not, are available here.

If your circumstances are longer term and are affecting multiple assessments, then extenuating circumstances may not be the most appropriate means of support. Please seek advice from your tutor, the SU or support services you are engaged with, such as DNS or Wellbeing.

2. Are you able to provide EVIDENCE with your application that shows how these circumstances affected you at the time of the assessment? (Click for more information)

The burden of proof to support your application lies with you at all times.

You will need to upload evidence to support your application, this should be in line with the information provided here and in the Student Guide to Extenuating Circumstances.

You must submit at least one piece of supporting evidence and up to a maximum of six. A student statement will not be sufficient evidence on its own to support an extenuating circumstance.
Your evidence and any supporting statement will only be shared with the EC Committee.

3. Have you explored OTHER SUPPORT options first? (Click for more information)

Would a short extension to your submission deadline help? Click here for details about how to apply for this option.

Will your circumstances affect you longer term? If your circumstances are longer term and are affecting multiple assessments, then extenuating circumstances may not be the most appropriate means of support. Please seek advice from your tutor, the SU or support services you are engaged with, such as DNS or Wellbeing.

Are the circumstances you are experiencing due to problems with the delivery of your courses? These issues should be raised directly with your School/Department.

4. Do you understand the possible OUTCOMES of an Extenuating Circumstances application? (Click for more information)

It’s important to note: there are a limited number of actions that the College can take in response to accepted Extenuating Circumstances. Outcomes might include the lifting of a late submission penalty or the opportunity to take the assessment again at the next available opportunity (this may be the next academic year). We cannot increase module marks, a year or degree average, or classification.
