Do I need to back up my work?

An unexpected event like hard drive failure, file corruption or a virus, could wipe out all your important files when you least expect it and often without warning. Computer or data failure is not generally accepted by the University as a reason why work can be submitted late, so it’s important to keep your work and your personal files backed up.

Files saved to your (Y:) and (W:) drives are recoverable for around 30 days, which is why we recommend you save your work here.

We strongly recommend that you also back up your files to an external or cloud-based source so you have a redundancy in case things go wrong; we recommend you save a copy of your work on OneDrive. It is a good idea to keep more than one back up.
