Welcome to Royal Holloway. Moving from further education to higher education is a huge leap and represents a real commitment to your education and personal development.

The department has a Moodle page for all students called ‘Information for Students: Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance’. This is where you can find important documents and useful information relating to your studies in the department, in particular your Undergraduate Handbook. All students are strongly encouraged to log onto this Moodle page and read through the information there. If this is not already on your list of courses, you can search for it by name, or self-enrol following the steps below.

Please follow these instructions to enrol yourself onto the Moodle page:

1. Log into Moodle with your usual Royal Holloway username and password
2. Click on the link below or copy and paste it into your browser:

3. Click on the orange Enrol me button which can be found towards the bottom of the page
4. This will enrol you on the course space. NB you only need to do this on your first visit to the course space, after that you will then see the course under your My Courses list as usual.

Research students at Royal Holloway are valued members of the lively academic community and occupy an important place in the College’s teaching and research activities. For day-to-day concerns and subject-specific research training, your first port of call is the Postgraduate Administrator in your departmental office with responsibility for postgraduate students. In addition your department will have a Director of Graduate Studies who you should feel free to consult.

Research Centres and Groups

A number of our Research Centres and Groups are interdisciplinary, and all welcome the participation of research students. We are keen to help foster intellectual and social links between postgraduate students and researchers from all disciplines. Find out more about Research Centres and Groups.

The Department runs a series of research training sessions called Ways of Working. To find out information about these sessions, please login to the Ways of Working Moodle page. Please note: these sessions are compulsory for first year PhD Drama students.

Research students may be interested in attending the Practice-based research programme, which is currently run from the Drama Department.  The programme consists of a core curriculum of six Skills Workshops as well as a Seminar, Lectures and an annual Student-Led Conference. The aim of the programme is to bring together researchers from across different disciplines, opening up a space to share and present work as a community of practice and learning. 

The College runs the Researcher Development Programme, where you will meet students from all disciplines.  The programme consists of a series of transferable skills courses designed for research students to help develop their skills alongside their research. You can find out further details about the programme on the Doctoral School website.

The department runs this grant scheme to provide financial support when you are invited to give a conference paper closely related to the subject of your research. The grant is available to all PhD students, but it is recommended that students apply for this fund in their 2nd or 3rd year. No more than £300 may be awarded over the course of your study.

To apply for the grant you must submit your request, along with a supporting email from your supervisor, to the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr Chris Megson. If your request is approved then this will allow you to claim back expenses incurred as a result of attending the conference, to a maximum of £300. Please make sure you keep all of your original receipts for your expense claim.

The grant is not usually available to cover travel or other expenses, but this may be possible in particular circumstances. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies for further advice.
