Care-experienced students are individuals who have spent time in the care of a local authority, such as in foster care, residential care, or under a special guardianship arrangement. These students may have left care at 18, or they may still be in care when they begin their studies. The challenges they face can include transitioning to independent living, securing financial stability, and adjusting to university life without the familial support that many other students rely on.
Prospective care-experienced students are encouraged to explore the support we offer via the Propel by Become website. We recommend contacting our named support representative before arrival to ensure everything is in place with your student loan and to address any concerns about transitioning to university life.
We will arrange a meeting during your first weekend or week on campus to help you settle in. If you choose not to engage initially, we’ll follow up early in the term to ensure you’re supported.
After your initial engagement, further interaction will be based on your personal preferences. However, you will receive communication at key points throughout the year, such as reminders to re-apply for your student loan or important dates for assessments and exams.
