A new version of Microsoft Teams is coming to Royal Holloway.

Microsoft will soon be introducing an update, replacing our existing Teams with a new version designed to improve speed, performance and appearance.

You may have noticed that Microsoft Teams has been renamed on your device as ‘Teams Classic’. The updated version will start to appear, called ‘Microsoft Teams (work and school)’

If you haven’t tried it yet, you’ll be prompted to switch over to the new Teams soon, with most users and devices being moved over from early January.

The experience within the new version of Teams will be very similar, but you may want to review your personal preferences to ensure any settings such as themes, layouts and file management preferences have been maintained.

You can start using the new Teams as soon as you are given the option through Microsoft’s automatic updates; this may involve you seeing a pop-up in Teams or a slider to toggle between versions.

The upgrade will appear for staff and students, but you may experience the rollout at different times. If you have Teams installed on more than one device, or use it in lecture theatres or PC labs, you may notice you have the update on some devices before others.

The new version of Microsoft Teams should feel very familiar; there are no substantial changes to the functionality, and the look and feel are very similar. If you do need support, we’re here to help.

You can contact the IT Service Desk if you experience any issues with the new Microsoft Teams or have any questions about the update.

While you wait for the new version to appear, consider keeping your Microsoft Teams regularly updated and refreshing your Teams knowledge with our online training resources.
