I’m Dominic, the President of the Computer Society. I’m taking over the student newsletter this week, as tomorrow marks the start of Cybersecurity Awareness Week at Royal Holloway!

Over recent years, the threat from cyber breaches and data loss has increased, and we all need to play our part and take steps to stay safe online. Here’s five steps for staying cybersecure:
  1. Keep your studying environment secure: The College provides us all with free antivirus software that you can find online. Make sure you download it on all your devices.
  2. Be aware of phishing: If you aren’t expecting an email from the sender, or the formatting and wording used within the email doesn’t look right, don’t open it. And definitely don’t click the attachment – chances are you haven’t been left £2 million in a will from someone you've never met!
  3. Install software updates to reduce software vulnerabilities:  Keep your operating system, your browser software and all of your apps up-to-date.
  4. Report all cyber incidents to IT Service Desk: If you think your College account or data has been compromised or affected, contact the IT Service Desk.
  5. Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication: No, ‘1234’ won’t make the cut! Make sure you use a strong and unique password for every account you create.
In support of this awareness week, we have also created a cybersecurity quiz, that provides you with the chance to win a £50 Amazon voucher. Complete the quiz by Friday 3 November, to be in with the chance to win!

If you have any further questions, every day this week from 11am – 1.30pm, cybersecurity specialists will be in the Davison Building to answer any questions you might have and they’ll also be handing out some Haribo!
