At Royal Holloway, we value race equality and know that our community is strengthened when we share perspectives, listen to the lived experiences of our friends, and the people we study and work with, and seek to learn from one another. This means that, as a College, we are committed to continuing to initiate and support conversations and action around race equality and to establish a culture that recognises and celebrates difference.
One of the aims of Black History Month is to celebrate the achievements of Black and Global Majority communities and individuals in Britain, including unsung heroes who have helped change the political, cultural and social landscape. Black History Month is a celebration of the achievements of racialised minoritised lives, but also an opportunity for people to learn more about the continued effects of systemic racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes; to work towards ensuring that we expand our awareness of history, expose and question dominant representations of our past that have remained largely unchallenged, and provide a platform for marginalised voices. Black History Month gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the contribution of black heritage and culture.
