Since September, we have been talking about a new academic structure for the College and the creation of six discipline-based Schools and a Doctoral School that will come into place from the start of the 2019/20 academic year.
During this time, we have consulted staff and students and worked closely with the Students’ Union to gather insight and feedback to try to ensure that the School structure achieves our goals. Change can be uncomfortable and I appreciate that you are keen to understand how the new Schools will work. As we move to the School structure we’re seeking to address the questions and concerns you raise and I would encourage you to have a look at the updated FAQ on the intranet.
The move to Schools provides us with an opportunity to transform the way in which academic administration is delivered across the College. A new administrative approach will enable the College to improve services used by students and staff, including the use of new technologies to make services more efficient and accessible.
The new approach also means that we can offer longer opening hours at the Helpdesks which will open daily between 8.30am and 5.30pm. During these times there should always be at least one person at the Helpdesk (but more people will be available when the need arises) and there will be a confidential space for private conversations with a member of staff. I’m very clear that the Helpdesk is there to help and be an easy and convenient first point of contact. However, the Student Services Centre, Student Advisory and Wellbeing, CEDAS, International Student Services and other members of the administration team continue to be there to help you depending on your needs and the circumstances.
Following internal advertisement and interview, your new School Managers have now been appointed and, along with the Heads of School are starting to prepare for a smooth transition to the School structures. You can learn more about your School Manager below.
