Here at Royal Holloway, there are many opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities that can become an important part of your life on campus. There are three student media outlets and over 140 clubs and societies to join, each providing you with an opportunity to discover new interests, form friendships and develop the skills that employers value.

In the last few weeks, the achievements of two of those student groups were recognised.

Congratulations to the Students’ Union’s Photosoc who were shortlisted for ‘Best Arts Society’ and ‘Most Improved Society’ at the National Societies Awards 2019 and were awarded runners up in the ‘Most Improved Society’ category. In the last year, the society’s membership increased by an impressive 250% and it introduced new initiatives such as weekly practical sessions and photography trips.

Well done also to the team involved in Insanity Radio. The station has been awarded a £9,950 grant from The National Lottery to help towards the redevelopment of one of the studios into a state-of-the-art multimedia space, which will benefit the student population, and the wider community of listeners. This upgraded studio will enable the many students who are involved in the three student media outlets to produce visual, radio and podcast content that will be useful experience for the modern workplace.

We are fortunate at Royal Holloway to have academics whose pioneering work and experience in their fields informs their teaching and research. Last week, Reader in Digital Arts at the Department of Media Arts, Victoria Mapplebeck, won a BAFTA in the Short Form Programme category for her short film Missed Call about her young son’s journey to reconnect with his absent father. It is one of the first professional documentaries in the world to be filmed on the iPhone X. You can watch Victoria's short film here.

I would like to congratulate Victoria for her BAFTA in addition to all the students who are involved in PhotoSoc and our student media outlets – Insanity, rhubarbTV and Orbital Magazine – for their achievements.
