As we settle into term one, and the new ways of studying, I encourage you to think about the variety of skills you have the opportunity to develop at this stage in your life and that will help you in the future.

Whilst the pandemic has created challenges, our Careers Service is still here for you online, to support you in accessing opportunities, for placements, volunteering, jobs and more.

Your degree from Royal Holloway will demonstrate your academic qualities and achievements to potential employers. However, employers are also looking for you to demonstrate how you have expanded your skills outside of your studies.

Our graduates tell us that taking part in activities such as volunteering, a placement, working a part-time job alongside their studies, or joining a sports club or society, or both, enriched their experience at university, and also provided them with skills that employers are looking for. This week (23 October) our Volunteering team will be marking Make a Difference Day so take a look at the Volunteering platform for more on how to get involved.

Deciding what to do after graduation will be unique to you; perhaps you already know what you want to do, possibly you’re still exploring options, or, perhaps you know what you’re good at and where your passions lie but are unsure what career will be right for you.

During these challenging times, there is guidance and advice available to you. I would encourage you to take a look on the student intranet for detailed information about online support from the Careers Service, including how to book an appointment with a Careers Consultant, and access virtual events.

The virtual Careers and Placements Fair on 21-22 October is an opportunity to speak to employers and explore a wide range of options available to you.

I hope you make the most of these valuable opportunities.
