Consequences of Not Attending and Engaging

What if I don't meet the College attendance and engagement requirements?

You'll be contacted by your Personal Tutor, or other representative from your School, and a meeting may be arranged:

  1. You fail to engage with all learning activities and assessments over a period that causes concern.
  2. Where your pattern of absence is considered to be having an effect your work, causing concern for your wellbeing or pointing to a possible disability that you may not have disclosed.
  3. Where your attendance and engagement is approaching a level that causes concern.

What can I expect at the meeting?

The aim of the initial meeting is to support you with engaging in your studies and to highlight to you at an early stage that your engagement is a cause for concern. It is designed to encourage you to report any factors that you feel are impacting on your ability to attend or engage and help identify where you may benefit from additional help from the College Student Advisory and Wellbeing services.

It is an opportunity to seek advice and assistance, particularly if you are having problems. If there are any particular circumstances that you'd like taken into consideration at the meeting, you should bring with you any relevant evidence to explain your circumstances which may include medical certification.

However, if you are regularly invited to meetings about your engagement, the staff at the meeting will outline the department’s expectation of you and if necessary will highlight the College's formal disciplinary procedures to you.

Disciplinary action for not engaging with your studies

As part of the College's disciplinary procedures, you could be issued with a formal warning which can escalate to the discontinuation of your registration at the College, as outline in the College Academic Regulations. Disciplinary action may be taken by the College in cases where:

 - Your engagement with your studies continues to cause concern

 - You submit work unsatisfactorily

 - You do not attend any compulsory meetings within the College.

 - Reasons for your non-engagement are not accepted by the College.

Student Administration in conjunction with your School must ensure that your level of engagement enables you to meet the learning outcomes of the degree course. If your engagement levels are of concern, and compromise educational standards, Student Administration and/or your School may still be required to implement disciplinary action, even if your reasons for non-engagement are valid.

In situations where you have provided evidence of severe difficulties which have impacted your attendance, the College will make every effort to support and guide you through the best course of action.

How does this affect my Student Route or Tier 4 visa

If you are studying on a Student Route or Tier 4 visa and have not met your engagement requirements, you will be issued with a formal warning as explained above. In addition, you may be called to a meeting with the Visa Compliance team to discuss your reasons for absence.

If it is found that you do not have valid reason or evidence for poor engagement, and are in breach of your Student Route or Tier 4 visa conditions, the College is legally obliged to report this to UK Visa and Immigration.

Your Student Route or Tier 4 visa will be curtailed (cancelled), ending your studies with the College and you'll be required to leave the UK.

If you do not respond to any warnings issued by the College or your engagement does not improve, you will be reported to UK Visa and Immigration and your Student Route or Tier 4 visa will be curtailed.
